For a longtime, the role of silica in the body was not known. Now, it is among the most important minerals. It can fortunately be found in most of the vegetables and fruits, and the shortages are rare. It is one of the least studied minerals, which is why we don't known exactly how much we need of it daily. Researchers have named silica recently into the category of the most important minerals for the body. Nutritionists estimate that an adult would need 20 to 30 mg per day.

This mineral helps the body to build up the bones, the teeth, the cartilages, the tendons and the hair, providing further resistance. He also gives the skin suppleness and the vascular walls elasticity. A diet rich in silica can prevent osteoporosis, atherosclerosis (thickening of arterial walls), skin wrinkling, thinning and hair loss, broken nails and tooth decay. It makes the teeth, the nails and the hair to shine. Silica exists in lungs tissue, so it is recommended for the re-mineralization process in tuberculosis patients. Because it helps to build up bone and cartilage, this mineral mustn't be missing from the diets of pregnant women and children ...
... suffering from rickets. It also contributes to assimilate phosphorus, which is very important for the brain health.

Fortunately, silica is found in many foods we eat everyday, and especially in fruits and vegetables. Some of the richest sources are the whole grains, the apples and oranges, lemons, grapes, raisins, almonds, peanuts, nuts, grains in general, cabbage, carrots, squash, green beans, cucumbers, mushrooms, onions, leeks, parsnips, nettles and radishes. From all of these, the whole grains contain a form of silica which is very easy to assimilate. Corn shelled and products of it (white bread, for example) do not contain silica. Moreover, all refined or processed products lose their nutrients, including silica. Beer and honey have also a large quantity of this mineral in their composition. It exists even in water in different quantities, depending from on the geographical area. Among the animal food sources, fish is the one which contains silica. Because the foods containing this mineral are so many, we can provide our body, usually without problems, the daily requirement. Silica deficiency is rare. It occurs in people who regularly eat fruit and vegetables and the elderly, because the mineral is more difficult to assimilate with age.

The presence of silica in the body is very important. The mineral is necessary for calcium absorption particularly in the early stages of bone formation, but also for maintaining skeletal health throughout life. It is involved in forming collagen and that's why it is important for the health of nails, skin and hair. Silica is also necessary to keep the flexibility of arteries, and plays a major role in preventing cardiovascular diseases. It stimulates the immune system and delays the aging process of tissues. The level of this mineral in the body decreases with age. Therefore, older people need a higher intake of silica, compared to younger ones.
