The purpose of a descriptive essay is to describe a person, place, event or thing correctly and completely. A descriptive essay is supposed to tinker all the five human senses, namely sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing. Of course, an essay doesn't necessarily have to tinker to all five senses at once. It depends largely on topic of the descriptive essay.

It is important that your descriptive essay should meet the requirements of the format prescribed by your examiner. Your essay should comprise of an appropriate opening statement, 3-4 paragraphs describing the object of your essay and a proper closing paragraph to wrap up your essay. Also make sure to reword and rephrase your opening statements from the rest of the paragraphs and avoid simply repeating every word from the previous statement.

The next step is to identify what you wish to describe in the essay. This may necessarily also act as your essay topic. Choose either between a person, place, event or thing and then proceed to describe it in your own words. The more detailed it is, the better grades you will get.

After this, you need to determine ...
... and then portray the overall impression to your target audience. It should create certain feelings or mental image in your reader's mind after he or she reads it. Therefore it is very important to realize what kind of feelings you wish to incite in your reader about the topic you are writing your essay about.

Using strong and specific examples to support your essay and its focal point that you are trying to convey is mandatory, as this is the point where you start to use sensory details. Explain how your intended object looks, feels, smells, sounds, and/or tastes. This is where the bulk of your essay will come from and the focal point of your descriptive essay.

Once you've understood the above basics, its now time to get down to actually writing the essay. Start off with getting all your thoughts together and organize your writing by spatial order. Simply put, start writing from the least important to the most important points.

Use transitional statements to blend your ideas together in order to increase the fluency of your paper. This way your reader will have a better understanding of your essay's central idea. And be sure to have a good thesis sentence, so that your readers are prepared for what to expect.
