Government officials have warned that government spending cuts to the NHS will force efficiency savings on a scale never before seen.Stephen Dorrell, chairman of the Commons Health Select Committee, said that the NHS had to save 4% a year for four years - a huge [but achievable] ask.

He added that the committee had consulted numerous health and local government experts about the challenge of making savings while maintaining standards.

"Nobody has told us it's impossible.Everybody has said it is extremely challenging."

In real terms the NHS budget will be broadly maintained but, due to economic factors such as inflation forecasts, the health service will need to find ways of doing more with the same amount of money.

NHS chief executive Sir David Nicholson has estimated the health service needs to make efficiency savings of between £15bn and £20bn over the next four years.

Nigel Edwards, acting chief executive of the NHS Confederation, which represents 95% of organisations that make up the NHS, said there was"real anxiety"among leaders about how to cope with efficiency savings, major management ...
... cuts and radical structural reforms.

Richard Jones,President of The Association of Directors of Adult Social Services also warned that the road ahead could be tough.

"Social services directors will make every efficiency saving that they are capable of.But I fear that,as Members of Parliament have confirmed today,it will be impossible in some authorities to maintain the standards of care we provide without restricting eligibility for those services."

These cuts could potentially force many people to rely more heavily on private healthcare to avoid long waiting lists, particularly for non-emergency treatments.A health care cash plan from Sovereign allows you to claim money back on a variety of everyday health care procedures, including dental health care, glasses and contact lenses, physiotherapy and home care.Visit the Sovereign website for more information.
