How Castors Helped The Allies Win World War Ii
World War II is one of the most important events in modern history. Defeating Nazi Germany and Hitler in particular has certainly helped to form the world we live in, complete with all of the freedoms that we enjoy, today. Ongoing between 1939 and 1945, the war essentially cost up to 70 million people their lives and split the world in half. The United States, United Kingdom, France, Soviet Union and China made up the Allies and were ultimately successful in defeating the Axis military alliance, which consisted of Germany, Japan and Italy. Numerous elements contributed to the victory but did you know that Castors was one of them?
Yes, castors. The small wheels that are today attached to shopping trolleys, office chairs, furniture, industrial transportation units and hundreds of other units that are able to move smoothly and quickly alike. They actually played a major part in the Allies' battle against the Axis and yet are never actually given credit for it.
Invented in 1876, Castors embody ...
... simple but effective modern technology. They were designed initially for use with furniture but played a completely different role during World War II. In fact, they played a number of different roles during World War II. The first and perhaps most important is the role they played in enabling doctors and nurses to attend to the injured as quickly as possible. They were attached to gurneys to make it easier for medics to stretcher soldiers out of the field. Instead of carrying the stretchers, they could simply place them on gurneys and run, pushing the injured ahead of them. Similarly, medical trolleys with castors were used to run supplies from one bed to the next with the doctor so that all equipment they needed to treat the patients was to hand.
Being attached to desks and cabinets, they made it far easier to simply up and leave as and when the enemy got a little too close. Larger castors, such as the BZJ series (100mm to 200mm, 210kg to 400kg), could also be used to move heavier loads. For example, weapons, fuel and even aeroplane parts could be transported quickly and easily using them. They definitely added to the mobility of our troops.
You see, the officers recognised all of the strengths and advantages that castors had to offer during World War II. They saw that they made transporting goods from one place to the next easier. They saw that they were reliable and would not let them down, get punctures or fail on surfaces that were a little less than smooth. They recognised that they improved efficiency and could make tasks far more effective without costing a fortune. Above all else though, they recognised that Castors could serve any number of functions and yet last as long as they required. They helped to save lives and win the war. Now what could provide a better endorsement than that?
