My Corporate Logo - Logo Design
For hundreds of years, businesses have utilized logos, trademarks and emblems as ways of differentiating themselves from their competitors and branding themselves to customers. Many consumers today can immediately recognize their favorite brands just based on the logo.
Logo design usually falls into one of three categories: abstract, representational, and wordmarks. Abstract marks are designs that don't specifically represent a certain thing, but that are associated with the business. Most car companies have abstract logos, like Mercedes and Chevrolet. The shape of the logo does not express anything about the company, but it is closely associated with the brand name.
Representational logos include a sign or symbol that refers to the business. The logo for Windows is a four-color window symbol. PBS uses a silhouette of a man's head; a representation of their everyman approach to programming.
Most modern companies have chosen wordmarks or lettermarks for their logo design. BBC, CNN, Subway and Coca-Cola are all represented by wordmarksl; a pictorial representation of their names. Some companies, like Yahoo ...
... and United Airlines, create a new symbol using the first letter of their name - a lettermark.
Ideas for logo design can come from lots of different places. Some companies just use their initials or company name as a logo. Other businesses like to use symbols of where they are or what they do. For instance, a dancewear store might have a picture of ballet slippers, or a beachside restaurant might have palm trees.
If you want to be taken seriously in your industry, a good logo is a must-have. Having a logo for your business cards, website and product packaging help brand your business and emphasize your professionalism to potential customers and clients. Logos create instant public recognition.
