The Hazard Communication Standard laid down by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration mandates certain specific actions by those employers that have hazardous chemicals present at their work places. The employers are required to have a written hazard communication plan, have labeled containers for all chemicals, provide Material Safety Data Sheets to all the employees and have an effective hazardous safety training program for all those employees that are exposed to hazardous materials and situations. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has developed standards for the employees in the general industry and industry specific hazard communication standard.

1.The General Industry Hazard Communication Standard 1910.1200: The agency defines hazards in the general industry Hazard Communication Standard as corrosives, carcinogens, substances and materials that are highly toxic, toxic chemicals, sensitizers and those chemicals that target specific organs. OSHA requires employers to evaluate the hazards present at the work place and communicate them to the employees through an easy to understand Hazard ...
... Communication Program. This program must include labeling for containers, warnings, material safety data sheets and training for the employees. The Hazard Communication Program has to be developed, implemented and maintained at the work place. Also, it should be presented when requested at inspections and investigations. This general industry Hazard Communication Standard is put to use in the long-shoring and construction areas. These are the two industries that lack distinct Hazard Communication Standards.
2.The Marine Terminal Hazard Communication Standard 1917.28: Those employed at the marine terminals are subject to the agency's Hazard Communication Requirements laid down in this industry. These include all Hazard Communication Requirements for the general industry as well as the additional requirements that are specific to the marine terminal industry. The Hazard Communication Programs in the marine terminals should cover all the other industry specific areas like cargo handling gear and equipments, personal protective equipments for the face, head and feet, respiratory safety and terminal facility safety during work in areas like platforms, elevators, docks, stairways and river banks.
3.The Shipyard Hazard Communication Standard 1915.1200: All the shipyard employers are subject to the Hazard Communication Requirements for shipyards. These requirements include all the general industry hazard communication requirements along with the additional requirements pertaining to the shipyard industry. A long list of toxic and hazardous substances that are used in the shipyard industry need to be covered in these standards. Every substance has to be included in the written Hazard Communication Program with the correct labeling hazardous safety training and documentation.
