The world of people afflicted with the curse of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) continues to be shrouded in mystery. The abject misery and trauma the carrier of the deadly virus is not unknown. The lentivirus causing AIDS is the largest claimer of lives in recorded history. Ever since the first isolation of the disease in 1981 there has been frenzied endeavor to wipe out the traces of it. But sad to admit HIV eradication drives have churned out little success. The result is that incidences of the illness have been on the rise with no definitive method of curing or controlling it in sight. Eradicating the reservoir of the infection firmly grounded at the time of its establishment is the objective of scientist, researchers and clinicians working towards a common cause.

Although total HIV eradication seems literally impossible, scientists allege to have the antidote for it just round the corner. The truth however, is that HIV is spreading like wild fire especially among the poor and not-so-well off countries. Researchers are putting in endless hours of hard work to curb the spreading of the deadly virus as well as to ...
... discover medical treatment for the persons already in the grip of it. Hundreds of organizations are working at the grass-root level to educate people about how the bodily fluids of the carrier can be plugged from entering newer hosts and multiplying there. Since the rampant pandemic is so destructive, it is necessary to step up our efforts towards creating a society without aids.

HIV eradication will follow eventually but for the time we can at least hope for a pause in its progression through new interventions. A timely course of antiretroviral treatment can sabotage the damage wrought by the virus. For the present, precaution against exposure to HIV seems to be the best option for complete HIV eradication. The most successful treatment today is the Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) that was discovered in 1996. It is a cocktail of at least three drugs. It has been observed that the mortality rate doubles if the use of HAART is delayed.

Inability to inhibit the replication of the virus is probably the singular reason why HIV eradication still remains a far cry. Besides HAART, there are several therapeutic methods of conquering HIV/AIDS in the pipe-line that seem promising. The innovative strategies adopted are on the right track but it will still be a couple of years before the clouds clear and we have HIV eradication in its entirety.
