Zinc is often described as the most omnipresent element in the human body. Although it has a tremendous positive impact over our body's health, the World Health Organization said that more than 80% of people in US are zinc deficient. The severe cases of this lack are met in the third world countries, where people don't consume too much meat. In the modern Western society, the zinc deficiency is more characteristic for the elders who have a reduced capacity to absorb it, for the vegetarians, for alcoholics who loose it through the kidney and for body builders who loose it through sweat and regimes. Anyways, due to stress, work and fatigue, all the people may not find the time to eat and this way they increase the risk in becoming zinc deficient. There are 300 zinc using enzyme reactions in the human body, so the symptoms of zinc deficiency may differ.

The immune system is the first area where the zinc shortage symptoms will occur. The thymus gland produces thymulin with the help of zinc. Thymulin helps the developing of T cells and T4 helper cells production. That's why people with a weak immune system are the first to ...
... consume zinc. Also, that's why zinc is much recommended during the cold seasons to strengthen the body and to protect it from colds and flu.

Zinc also takes care of our skin, by preserving its elasticity and collagen supply. It is often used in wound healing and skin conditions like dermatitis, psoriasis and acne. Its valuable effects over the acne have been scientifically proved because zinc controls the sebum production; it stops and prevents the infections through the immune system, and improves wound healing so the scars from any skin infection are visibly reduced. The keratin production in the human body is based on zinc, so if you are suffering from deficiency you will notice it by observing how your hair and nails are degrading. A hair without luster and falling, brittle nails that peel are the first "outside symptoms" of a zinc shortage.

Another common symptom of zinc shortage is fatigue. The testosterone production is directly influenced by zinc, so when a low level of this hormone is met in both men and women, fatigue is getting installed. You may feel exhausted without even getting out of bed. Zinc helps the testosterone level to increase in the bloodstream; therefore you will feel energized like you have just recharged your batteries. For women, who have a lower level of testosterone, the increase in this hormone production will not only improve energy but will also help in preventing osteoporosis. For men, zinc is almost vital for the health of the prostate which is the organ with the higher level of zinc.

The best way to keep your zinc level optimum is to take care of your diet, not to abuse alcohol or drugs, and to use zinc supplements, especially if you are feeling tired. You also need to have a balanced lifestyle and stay away as much as you can from stress.
