Wedding speeches are like wedding dresses. They can be short and simple or frilly. They can be any length you like and they can make or mar a wedding. Traditionally the wedding speeches are given by the father of the bride, the father of the groom, the groom and the best man. However in these days of divorce the step-father of the bride may speak or, if her father is dead or absent, the brother of the bride may say a few words. A friend of the family may choose to speak or indeed the bridesmaid or maid of honor. Then too, less formally, a peer of the bride or groom may express his or her good wishes on the wedding day.

Basically wedding speeches are about expressing the feelings of the speaker for the couple in question. The father of the bride and the father of the groom usually like to speak about their pride in their son or daughter. So they will speak of the bride's accomplishments or the groom's successes. They will say how pleased they are to welcome their new son or daughter-in-law into their respective families. They will also, usually, speak at their pleasure in the fact that so many people have come to ...
... the wedding. The father of the bride will end his speech with a toast to the couple while the father of the groom will end with a blessing or some words of wisdom.

The groom himself will speak of his beautiful bride and how much he cares for her. He may speak of his gratitude to his parents and assure her parents that he will cherish her. He might say something complimentary, or funny, about his best man. He will end his speech with a toast to the bridesmaids.

The best man will tell of his relationship with the groom and of their shared exploits. He should mention how beautiful the bride is and how well suited she is to the groom. He will express his good luck wishes for a long and happy marriage. Finally it will be his duty to reply to the toast to the bridesmaids. He will speak of his agreement with the groom of how wonderfully they performed their duties. He may speak of his good fortune in his duty of looking after them and how he looks forward to seeing himself in the photographs surrounded by such beautiful women.
