The Future Is Now Says Ibm

Get ready for life imitating art imitating life. Yep, you read that right. IBM has come out with their Five in Five Predictions, including one that states holographic cell phone technology will be here in only 5 yearsâ€assuming we all survive the 2012 Doomsday Scenario.
Technology that will enable users to hold a conversation with another person while seeing them in 3D is slated to arrive in a cell phone near you by 2015. I suppose that because the prediction came out of the mouth of a technology giant, it should probably not be considered mere whimsy, despite the fact that a holographic phone has been imagined by countless sci-fi writers and animators since Princess Leia left that SOS for Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Apparently, scientists are already hard at work trying to simulate the way the human eye works by developing a technology that will take the light reflected off objects and reconstruct them in a holographic image, but not on a baseball card this time. If they are able to be successful, it would revolutionize the way people do everything from heart surgery to building bridges.
However, IBM and other ...
... companies such as Qualcomm, that are interested in or currently working on this type of technology don’t exactly want to start out by marketing to the medical or engineering industries. The development and research process is incredibly expensive. By putting their investment into telecommunications first, they can get some capital right back from the public, creating traction and interest that will diffuse into more specialized industries afterward.
Before you begin with a rebuttal that starts with the impossible power requirements such a phone would have, IMB is talking about what batteries will look like in the future too. Believe it or not, they are working on a battery that breathes air. Yes, you heard that right again. Air. It would last 10 times longer than current models, in cars, phones, or whatever else you want to use them for.
They are also experimenting with batteries that recharge using both kinetic and static energy. You see, the two fastest growing economies, India and China, each have a large rural populations that need easy, low cost ways to get more energy, so cell phone batteries that can be recharged by rubbing it against your clothes is a way into those markets. At least, that’s the market IBM and others are going for.
Among other predictions, IBM says that:
* It is possible in the near future not to have traffic accidents or even traffic. Integrated sensory systems will be put in place to automatically detect hot spots before they turn into gridlock and reroute you on your way to work.
* We will be able to know everything there is to know about the food we buy: calories, carbs, sugar content, fat content, where it was grown, the carbon footprint of the shipping method used to deliver it, the health of the environment where its ingredients were grown, etc.
* Cell phones will act like personal assistants, not in the current cell phone way, but in an intuitive human way.
* Superdoctors with supersenses will be able to accurately detect what is ailing us using integrated and instantaneous databases, including our medical records.
Basically according to IBM, despite global warming, if we continue on our current technological path, our NEAR future looks greener, healthier and a lot more like a role playing game.
