Nothing is worse than struggling with sleep apnea. This condition can leave you feeling bad for days, weeks, and months at a time. It causes you to live in a perpetual state of exhaustion and it can be life threatening if it goes untreated. There are several sleep apnea treatment options available, but you need to do some research to determine what is most effective for your particular situation.
If you suspect you or a loved one has sleep apnea, the first step is to get an official diagnosis from a doctor. Some signs to be looking for are excessive snoring or gasping while asleep. Of course, if you are the one that has problems with your breathing during sleep hours, you might not notice the issue. For some people, the only way they realize they have the problem is by the constant exhaustion that never seems to go away.
To diagnose sleep apnea, your doctor will ask you to participate in a sleep study. During this test, you will stay overnight in a medical facility such as your local hospital or a nearby lab. Most of the time, these facilities are set up to resemble a simple hotel room with a comfortable ...
... bed and a nearby restroom. Then you will be hooked up to sleep apnea monitors that will keep a close check on you throughout the night.
The nurse will place small sticky pads all over your body which will lead to a machine nearby. This may seem uncomfortable at first, but you should be able to sleep pretty comfortably despite the stickers. As you sleep, a small video camera will be recording you to capture any snoring, gasping, or severe tossing and turning that might occur.
Once the results are in, your doctor will help develop a sleep apnea treatment that is best for you. There are many options and the treatment plan will depend heavily on how severe your sleep apnea is. If you have only a mild case that causes a bit of snoring, but no true breathing concerns, your sleep apnea treatment might include a jaw brace or a simple mask. These products can be purchased online or in some medical supply stores.
If your sleep apnea treatment plan is more serious, you might need to wear a breathing mask at night to make sure you don't lose too much oxygen during your sleeping hours. While these masks can be very uncomfortable, it is important that you comply with your doctor's instructions when it comes to sleep apnea treatment. This is a life threatening condition in some cases, so you do not want to play around with your health.
Most of the time, you can adjust to wearing an apnea mask pretty quickly. The best news is that you will start to feel better within just a few nights of wearing it. You will get more restful, solid sleep and as a result, your body will function better throughout the day and your mind will be more alert.
