Kings from days long gone used to wear jewels to display their wealth; chieftains in battles would have them set in their armor to cause fear in their enemies. Interestingly enough, after hundreds of years, mankind really hasn't changed. People still use designer jewelry for much the same ways - except now, they're also signaling other things - membership of a tribe, personal concepts, ideals, thoughts, beliefs.

Aside from the mainstream, emerging designers have in 2010 presented the fashion world with a wide variety of indie jewelry to choose from. Gothic jewelers Enfants Perdus presented their 2010 collection, a fantastical line, scattered with skull rings, vines and precious materials cast in gold, and the subversive clash between man and nature. It is a collection that is dangerous, yet slyly subversive.

... of several small-scale pieces, progressed into a strong development of Gothic Jewelry and other pieces for a singular collection for this emerging designer jewelry line in 2010. The NYC based line exhibits regularly, and is carried in a small number of boutiques across the world, including more exotic locations such as Brazil, Dubai, and Hong Kong.

Our clients are those who share in the values that we believe in, says Tsien, They're not universal by any means, but they're cross culture: the conquering of the struggle, the making of one's self through one's own motive power, risking failure for success.

As we discuss his line's upcoming 2011 line, the emerging designer shares his visions. Enfants Perdus, unlike many jewelry lines in 2010, remains committed to working with sterling silver and 18 karat gold. Many jewelry and accessory lines have been pushed out of the space by the meteoric rise of commodities, Tsien explains, but Enfants Perdus intends to work with designs and space instead of sacrificing the luxury of premium jewelry materials - sterling silver, 18 karat gold jewelry, black pearls, diamonds and sapphires.

Of the many emerging designers in NYC and design labels, Enfants Perdus will be exhibiting with several other lines in 2010 in a shared Manhattan gallery space, as well as a gallery exhibition planned for April 2011.
