Geiger is fairly happy about a contract Local 21 just finished negotiating with Harrison Medical Center Vibram Five Fingers Bikila about 700 workers, including technicians, licensed practical nurses and pharmacists.
Unlike some others, that contract had around a 2 percent annual pay increase and a good health-care plan. So if they qualified today to get $500 a month and they retire in 10 years, that amount will still be $500.
The current UFCW Local 141 contract covering 670 Harrison nurses calls for 30-minute lunch breaks, and 15-minute breaks for every four hours worked.
"The problem is, you can't get off," said Sharon Ness, union representative.

... the problem is that before nurses go on breaks, they have to assign their duties to another nurse, which is sometimes difficult, she said.
Harrison has brought in "float nurses" to some departments, which has brought much improvement.
"In other departments, it's very bad," she said.

Harrison, according to Ness, isn't ordering nurses to get shots like some hospitals, but instead is educating its nursing staff that getting them helps everyone.
Ness said that so far she's glad Harrison hasn't opted to require face masks or dots placed on name tags for nonimmunized nurses.
