There is a general misconception among the masses that autism is a form of mental retardation. The essence is that mentally retarded kids exhibit difficulties in developing skills of all genres whereas children with autism have difficulties restricting to particular skill set like social interaction and behavior. The aptitude of a mentally challenged child is low pertaining to all natures but children with autism can be gifted with aptitude in any genre where they can surpass an average child with a normal IQ. Experts say, unlike mental retardation, autism is not a disorder and only a difference. Children with autism perform significantly well than below average kids. Autism can be found in people with high profiles on other activities.

Even the celebrated physicist and the Nobel Prize winner, Albert Einstein, was reported by the BBC, to have exhibited autistic behavior when he was about 7 years old. His confusing lectures were falsely attributed to his intelligence. Spotting autism in children is not easy as autistic children behave no different from the rest. It is reported there is one singularity in every 100 children in UK and the chances of the child being suspected with autism by the parent is very low. The behavior of the child will get the attention of the parents only when the child lacks development in certain areas compared to other kids in the ambiance. The early discovery of autism in a child is of vital importance as the child needs special attention and care. There are different screening approaches practiced by the medical practitioners in different parts of the world. Though there is an argument over which is the most effective method, it is to be noted that finding out singularities in your kid is very important by any means as it leads to complications in later stages of life of the child if left untended to.

As stated by the experts, the key trait of an autistic child is the lack of social interaction. In case of infants, it can be found in terms of lack of gesturing i.e. waving, pointing or interaction of any form through actions. The child also exhibits lack of communication unlike the communicative level of normal kids. Apart from these traits the child may or may not exhibit learning disabilities or disabilities of any sort in this regard.

Autism has so far been an incurable disorder. But, the knowledge that should be gained is that, if cared and nurtured properly, autistic children can be shaped to lead a perfectly normal life.
