In the State of Arizona, Senior Elder Prescription Health Insurance is available to those who may need help paying their prescription costs. Medicare began covering some prescription drugs and introduced Part D prescription drug plans. Medicare Part D is operated by private insurance companies and is available to seniors who may join Medicare Part A, or are enrolled in Medicare Part B. It may also be part of the Medicare Part C Advantage care plan.

Medicare Part D coverage is voluntary for most people at the age of 65. If a senior is enrolled in Medi-Cal (California states Medicare program), they are automatically enrolled in Part D Prescription services. Different plans are offered in each state for Part D coverage since private companies issue the plans. The terms of coverage of payments are set by the company issuing the Part D plan and are subject to Medicare’s general rules. Therefore, monthly premiums can vary in price ranging from $10-$75 each month. Some plans may not have a premium at all, but generally plans with the lowest copayments have the highest premiums.

Unfortunately, there are ...
... no plans that cover every prescription drug. Some prescription drugs are not covered at all, including sedatives, sleeping pills, weight loss or gain pills, and OTC medications. Medicare requires each Part D plan to cover two prescription drugs from each class of medications. For each disease or condition, the plan may cover some but not all prescription drugs available. The formulary (the list of drugs covered) are the only drugs covered by the specific plan. Therefore, it is important to see which prescriptions are in a plans formulary. Some plans also place restrictions on drug availability or costs, which can make a generic drug cost less than the brand-name drug, or the copayment be different for each drug.

If the seniors income is low and they have few assets other than a home, they may be eligible for assistance in paying for the costs of the Part D plan. This Low-Income Subsidy (LIS) is available to seniors who need help paying for the costs of Medicare Part D plans. Make an appointment to visit the Social Security Administration if your senior loved one is within the 150 percent of the federal poverty level or has few assets up to $12,000/individual.

It is important to know the changes your Part D plan is making, especially within the plan’s formulary. Choose a plan with the fewest restrictions on access to specific drugs and choose the lowest total costs of the drugs. Consider the premium costs as well, but keep in mind that the premium costs may be high, but the costs of the drugs may be lower. Some pharmacies may not participate in the Part D plan you are interested in. Therefore, make sure that your local pharmacy participates in the plan you choose. Look around at a few plans to decide which one is right for you. You may want to consider signing up for the open enrollment for a plan, thus you should make sure you know whether or not this plan is a good fit. Medicare Consultants can also help you figure out the best plans to fit your budget, your needs, and to help you as you age.
