What Is An Wireless Network
In this chapter, a wireless network is a network that consists of two or more connected 70-297 wireless computing devices in either:
Infrastructure mode Wireless clients connect to a wireless access point (AP) that might or might not be connected to a wired network.
Wireless clients connect directly to each other without using an AP.
Other types of wireless networks, such as the cellular phone network or other wireless communications networks, are not covered in this chapter.
Several versions of the 802.11 wireless standard—including 802.lib, 802.lla, 802.111, and 802.llg have been or are being implemented in commercially available devices. However, the most prevalent systems are 802.lib. Another standard, 802.Ix, is not a standard that defines a wireless network; instead, it defines a security protocol (encryp?tion and authentication) for 802.11 wireless networks that also can be used for wired networks. Table 12-1 lists and defines the current 802.11 wireless standards. In the table, the acronyms WEP and WPA are used. These terms indicate encryption ...
... process?ing, which is fully defined in the section "Wireless Network Security Features" later in this lesson. For more information about the standards, see the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) wireless Web site at Designing exam.
Ensure secure clients. Authorized wireless clients can pose a risk to the entire network if they store sensitive information for authentication and communication with the access point. If the client is not secure, this information can be easily obtainable by an attacker. Some wireless networks are accessible via custom clients. The clients might store the SSID in the registry. Encryption keys might be stored in the registry unencrypted. This is not an issue with Windows XP because any SSIDs are stored in the interface and clearly visible.
Specify a wireless access point configuration standard in the wireless security policy. A standard configuration for all
Free A+ exam questions access points will ensure that the security you specify is applied uniformly to all base stations.
