How To Lose Weight When The Odds Are Stacked Against You
You know how to lose weight. Most people have read enough books and seen enough videos to know what they should be doing. But sometimes this knowledge is not enough on its own. What you really need to know is how to stay slim. Even the most grounded and successful people can have trouble with their weight. This can cause the deepest unhappiness, because despite desperately wanting to do the right thing, it can feel as though the whole world is against you.
One of the most common questions we can ask ourselves when our weight loss program isn't going quite as we had planned is 'Why?' This question can often leave us feeling disempowered because the answer is usually something we don't want to hear or acknowledge. The 'why' question very often finishes with the phrase 'I don't know.' So we go around and around in circles, all the while doing nothing to solve the problem. Here are some really common but fairly useless ‘why' questions:
* Why am I choosing this donut instead of an apple? (I don't know)'
* Why is it so easy for everyone else? (I don't know; ...
... it's not fair);
* Why Can't I lose this weight?(I STILL don't know)
Many times you will never know the answer to life's mysteries. Yet many people become stuck in the notion that they have to find the answer to each and every little problem before they can move forward. This is simply not true. Most often we never really discover the real reasons why some things happen to us, so if we get attached to finding that answer then it only causes more frustration, pain and emptiness.
When I take in a new weight loss hypnotherapy patient, I very rarely ask about her current eating habits, nor do I ask her why she is doing what she is doing. After all, I'm supposed to be the expert. If she knew the answer she probably wouldn't be coming to me. Concentrating mostly on what the client is doing now sometimes serves to give the unwanted behaviour more power and wastes valuable time that could otherwise be used to discuss more positive strategies.
You will never lose weight and stay slim by continuing to do what you're doing. Instead, try focusing on the solution rather than the problem. You can do this by ditching the ‘why' questions and replacing them with ‘what' questions, such as:
* What emotions are you feeling when you overeat?;
* What are you willing to sacrifice in order to achieve your goal weight?;
* What specifically are you willing to do differently to change your circumstances?
This last question is very important. At the end of the day, no amount of weight loss hypnotherapy can help a person who is not willing to change what they are doing. I'm not suggesting that we should never explore the reasons why people overeat and refuse to exercise. What I AM saying is that we don't necessarily need to know why we are behaving in a certain way in order to be able to stop the behaviour and adopt another more empowering behaviour. So the next time you feel stuck, try a 'what' question instead. This will teach you how to lose weight by asking constructive questions that promote growth and change.
