One of the most commonly used communication methods, your phone, presents an interesting set of challenges. Your incoming information consists of tone, rate, pitch, inflection, volume, energy, words and syntax. What's missing is some of the context in which the other person experiences the call.

Start each call by putting yourself in the state you want to induce. They will usually match it.

Pacing their speech will make you easy to understand. Introduce yourself clearly, state the nature of your desire and ask them if now is an appropriate time for a discussion. Offer to call at a more preferable time if they indicate that now is not. Use binding questions like: Earlier or later in the week? This helps them pick a context when they will be receptive to you.

Pacing people's speech pattern is more effective when you adjust your accent closer to theirs. Canadians for example tend to speak rapidly without emphasizing individual words. e.g.: This is fantastic NLP training! Americans tend to emphasize the first syllable of each word . e.g.: THis IS FANtastic NLP TRaining!

Listen carefully to yourself ...
... and them while you are on the phone. When you take the time to find out their situation on the other end and pay attention to your state, your telephone can help you communicate your ideas successfully.
