People have their picture taken by a good photographer, then look at the proofs and say, "That's not a good picture of me." But the camera isn't lying. It reflects what it sees. What these people really mean is, "The picture is not flattering enough." Of course this never happens to me because I'm so "photogenic." Yes, now I'm lying to you. It hurts me to say it, but I usually avoid the camera altogether or repeat the trip to the photographer for retakes. Now that the truth is out of the bag, let me square with you who I am really. I am nothing more than a sinner redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ. I'd like to tell you that I'm a "somebody." I'd like to tell you that I'm charming, talented, gifted, athletic, motivated, and above all--good looking. I'd like for you to see me as a man of accomplishments, titles, successful, spiritual, and everything good. The truth is I'm a hodgepodge of traits just like you--some good and some not so good. ... God daily for grace. You see, God accepts me the way I am and lifts me up in my helplessness to become more than I am through Christ Jesus. Does that make sense? Allow me to say it this way: I am what I am by the grace of God. And I thank God for His grace. I will leave you with this. It's really not a bad thing to be identified as a man in need of God's grace. Why? Maybe I can illustrate it with this story. Recently I've taken on the responsibility of mopping floors at my son-in-law's business. It dawned on me the other day just how much respect I get from people who hesitate to walk across my freshly mopped floors. For some reason, people seem to respect a floor janitor. Time and time again, people will stop dead in their tracks, look at me and say, "I'm really sorry. I don't want to track up your floors." I smile and reply, "That's okay. Just be careful, and don't slip." There are very few things in life that command that much respect. My background is military, law enforcement, and ministry. I hold credentials in all these fields, but none grants me the respect that I get from mopping floors. With no rank insignia, with no uniform and badge, and with no clergy vestments donned, I command such respect by my fellow man that he or she stops, looks at me, and hesitates to walk across what I've put down. The Bible is right. The greatest position in life is servant. The one who serves shall one day be promoted to the head of the line by Jesus Himself. Respect in this life and reward in the next one. That's not a bad deal. Keep the faith. Stay the course. It's okay to serve because Jesus is coming soon with your reward. Pastor T.
