Suddenly we see so many elderly people wobbling their way along the roads, and wonder, wow, such energy, even at this age! The increased lifespan of humans in the recent years can be attributed to the significant developments resulting from medical research.

Hearing about a new medicine or the latest finding in the field of medicine, daily, either in newspapers or on television, is nothing new nowadays.

Medical research like any other research activity, relates to the basic and applied research, which is undertaken to aid the body of knowledge in medicine. Research in this field is undertaken under two branches: one is to evolve new treatments keeping both safety and efficiency in mind, and testing the same clinically for success rates, and second type is research of already existing treatments, which can be made better and more effective than already existing ones.

Medical research has thrown light on many useful and lifesaving solutions which have actually lead to the eradication of certain diseases. This has also helped to reduce the fear which once haunted people about certain diseases which were far from being treated. Some findings worth mentioning include vaccines for polio and measles, insulin for diabetes, antibiotics for almost any malady, treatments for cancer, AIDS, etc.

The advancement in technology has led to the invention of new and effective surgical equipments. Things like laser operations to treat vision, laser surgery, etc are all aimed at causing less pain and giving higher degree of comfort and satisfaction to make lives of people better.

Even cosmetic surgery, is branch of medicine, also developed mainly due to effective and deep research. Cosmetic surgeons in today's day and age are one of the most sought after, because after all, everyone wants to look beautiful and have the perfect body, and there is a solution for everything ranging from a nose job to obesity!

Medical research hence has been a boon to mankind. There are many career opportunities in this field, not only as researches, but also analysts, physicians and laboratory personnel, who can make a career in this area if their interest lies in finding something new to save lives and make the world a better, happier and healthier place to live in.
