Mole Removal: Is It Safe?
Most people have moles, also known as melanocytic nevi, on their skin that they were either born with, or which probably appeared during the first 20 years of their life. Moles appear in many shapes and sizes, and are usually brownish or skin-toned in colour, and can be flat or raised from the skin. They can also be smooth or rough in texture and some may have hair growing from them.
Generally, moles and skin tags are small and don't pose problems, however large or raised moles can be troublesome especially if they are on the face or other visible parts of the body, or if they are in a position where clothing can rub or catch on them. Removing unsightly moles can also increase confidence and make shaving or applying makeup much easier, which is why mole removal has become popular in both men and women.
It takes just half an hour to remove a mole under local anaesthetic. It's a simple surgical procedure with very few side effects other than a slight redness and swelling after removal, and a neat scar that is barely noticeable compared to the mole itself. Patients can return home the same day, and it can make a ...
... massive improvement in any area of the body where a mole was unsightly, or had changed over time.
Risks during mole removal are minimal, although it's important to remember that most moles are harmless and benign. If patients do have any concerns about a mole or about whether it's safe to remove a particular mole, it's a good idea to ask for a histology report which can check whether there is anything suspicious. Mole removal surgeries are available from a number of clinics, however it is worth checking with your GP first as they will be able to advice you on the best course of action.
