Smtp Service - How Does It Work

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is a widely popular and standard format for e-mail delivery across internet protocol networks. The mail servers as well as other mail transferring agents make good use of SMTP service in order to send and receive messages. But the user-side client applications require this service only for the purpose of message sending to a mail server. The client mail applications use the post office protocol or internet message access protocol to receive emails.
The entire gamut of SMTP mail processing is very interesting though the non-technical persons may consider it very tough to chew on. Mail submission is done on the TCP port 587 though some providers allow the use of traditional port 25. When the mail server, known as mail submission agent receives the mail submitted by a mail client, it sends the mails to MTA or mail transfer agent. Local processing may involve either a single machine or many appliances. File sharing among the involved processes is possible in the former case while the later type uses the SMTP service for internal message transfer. In this processing, configuration of each ...
... host is done in such a way that every process acts as an SMTP mail server.
It is the responsibility of the terminal MTA to find out the target host. It scrutinizes the mail exchanger record or MX record to seek the recipient's domain. In order to do so, MTA takes help of domain name system. When the name of the target host is located, the MTA tries to find its IP address to build up connection with it. The host is then be treated as an SMTP mail client. After receiving the incoming mail messages, the MX delivers them to the mail delivery agent or MDA. The mails then get saved in the relevant mailbox format. It is a noteworthy point in this regard that a single or many computers can be involved for the sake of mail reception. The MDA may dispatch the messages to storage or forward them over the network . While forwarding the mails, the MDA takes help of SMTP service or local mail transfer protocol or any other means.
After being delivered to the local mail server, the messages are stored by the authenticated mail clients or MUAs for the purpose of batch retrieval. Retrieval of SMTP mails is done by the email-clients, often called the end-user applications. Either internet message access protocol or post office protocol is involved for the mail retrieval. The former protocol helps in accessing the mails and also managing the stored messages whereas the later one uses a proprietary system including Micorsoft Outlook/Exchange or Domino/Lotus or mail file format. Any of the above-said methods can be used by the Webmail clients though retrieval protocol is not considered a formal standard.SMTP service is associated with message delivery and therefore explicitly defines the mail envelope and other related parameters including the envelope sender. But it does not define the header or the body of the SMTP mail message.
