A lathe is a tool used to machine very hard materials in industrial machining applications; they were originally meant to machine metal parts. As stated before, a tool room lathe is a kind of center lathe. (Adding to the confusion, it’s useful to know they’re also called bench lathes or engine lathes). Center lathes are used by the general machinist or even by hobbyists, since they can sometimes be mounted on a bench and feature automated feed to the cutting tool, (in the mechanical sense). They eventually evolved from purely mechanical tools to fully geared, high speed electronic tools due to innovation in automobile technology.

However, a tool room lathe has been enhanced and optimized for tool room use on a shop floor. It is not appropriate for amateur hobbyists. It is the most advanced, top-of-the-line version of a center lathe, often featuring the best optional functions of lesser models. These extra features could include a collet closer, a taper attachment, the highest accuracy technology available, the smoothest running design, and selective assembly. These refinements mean that tool room lathes are naturally more expensive than general center lathes. Different manufacturers of tool room lathes compete based on quality, not price, because they know that any machining operation needing one has highly complex needs.
