She had been drifting around the music industry as a backup singer and as a studio musician for years before realizing that this is what works: Get people's attention in a big way.

If nothing else, even if you don't like her music, you have to admit that she's a genius when it comes to marketing and shameless self promotion. The music she's putting out now is no different than it was when she was an obscure artist with a low-rent record deal, but since she's found a way to grab the public's attention, she's really become a household name. It's an interesting example of how far pure showmanship can go in the entertainment world.

The ringtone thing is another brilliant aspect to her marketing. Her songs are more than just a catchy hook, but they do contain catchy hooks, which makes them perfect for ringtones. This is essentially a form of automatic word of mouth. Her fans get a call in a crowded room, and that fan's friends say "Hey what's that on your ringtone?". This way, even people who don't think they like Gaga wind up getting turned on to her.

Whatever your opinion on her music, the fact remains that Gaga has figured out how to make a name for herself on the music scene better than just about any other artist out there. What it comes down to is the mix of catchy music that's worth listening to, and a persona that's loud, bold and one of a kind.
