Well, actually it is nothing like that at all. This may help you to dispel those preconceptions...

The Myth of ‘Sitting Around All Day Long'.

You may not be aware of it, but being sat in a car for hours on end is not what it's cracked up to be! In fact, it can be downright uncomfortable! You would be surprised at just how many minicab drivers develop back problems because of constantly being in the same position. Many cabbies will also suffer from migraine, fatigue or eyestrain because of constantly staring at the road.
Besides, have you ever thought how mind-numbing it can become when you are just driving to the same old places every day? There are only so many radio stations you can listen to! All in all, driving a taxi cab can often be stressful, boring and extremely tiring.

The Legend of ‘Easy Money'.

Yeah, right. Taxi drivers earn every penny of their wages. Many will work very long hours in some pretty demanding conditions. It's not all relaxing ‘open road driving out' there, you know! Most of a minicab driver's time will be spent in queues of traffic and ...
... it can all become very frustrating.

Another ‘bonus' of the job is when the weather gets a little on the warm side. Sitting in what is effectively a ‘greenhouse on wheels' is certainly not the best way of staying cool! Modern vehicles may be fitted with air con, but you can't sit with the engine running when you are between fares. Petrol is quite expensive you know...

The Fallacy Surrounding ‘Minimal Outlay'.

There are actually quite a few costs to consider when you are running a taxi business. To begin with, your vehicles will go through a colossal amount of tyres, clutches and brakes because of the sheer amount of miles they do.
Then there is comprehensive minicab insurance cover to pay for every year. This may not be the most expensive type of cover in the world, but it will certainly be more costly than the average driver's standard car insurance! And don't forget the other drivers in your employ; there are always wages to pay.

The Allegory of ‘Having Nothing to Do'.

Taxi drivers are always busy, even between jobs. If they are not ferrying passengers from one place to another, then there are plenty of other things to be done.

Paperwork must be filled in and long routes will need to be planned; whilst checking a car's oil, water and tyre pressures is an ongoing concern. It's true; some days may have fewer fares than others and yes, it can be very boring. But there will always be another newspaper to read.
