Android Application Development - Rich Application Development Community

Just like PC or laptop has an Operating System, the smartphone also needs an Operating System with which they would perform multiple functions. There are number of mobile operating system such as Symbian, Android, Java, etc.
Android is one of the most promising mobileOS initially developed by Android Inc. based upon a modified version of the Linux kernel. Android was purchased by Google in 2005.
Android surpassed iPhone sales in the third quarter of 2010, Google's Android phones have ushered in a new generation of smartphone users. Representing about 8.7 million Android users in the U.S., this rapidly growing segment of the mobile phone industry demonstrates that apps aren't just for iPhones anymore.
Android has a large community of developers writing application programs ("apps") that extend the functionality of the devices. There are currently over 100,000 apps available for Android. Android Market is the online app store run by Google; though apps can be downloaded from third party sites (only AT&T disallows this).
For Android Application Development , Java language is used. Device is controlled ...
... by using Google-developed Java libraries.
Android includes some core apps:
An e-mail client compatible with Gmail
An SMS program
A Personal Information Management (PIM) program including a calendar and contact list
A Google Map Application
A web browser
A music player
A picture viewer
The Android Marketplace client to download third-party application
The Amazon MP3 store client to purchase DRM free music
As large community of developers writes application programs, you can find latest apps and its regular updates. Google yesterday has launched a new version of its YouTube app for Android phones, YouTube Ver 2.1. The update is noteworthy not only because of the improvements it brings, but also because YouTube app updates will be delivered separately from Android OS releases going forward.
New feature additions in YouTube 2.1:
In-page playback: without interrupting video playback you can read the video description, browse related rate or flag videos.
Posting comments: you can post a comment while the video is playing
Subscription updates: They've made it easier to access new videos from your subscriptions. If you are signed into your account, you will see all your subscription updates right on the home screen of the app.
New full-screen UI: To enter full-screen mode simply rotates the phone. The new player controls make it easier to seek within the video, and you can pause or resume the playback by just tapping on the screen.
