One small crack can turn into a large fissure in just one snow storm. Water will certainly freeze within cracks and holes and will expand dramatically. Once the water expands inside the crack or hole, it causes it to get even bigger. Imagine a week where the ice is continuously melting and then freezing again and you can imagine how much damage can be done just by one bad storm.

In addition to the damage that the actual ice and snow causes, you also have to worry about the damage that road crews cause. Although salt might be fantastic for de-icing the highways, it can cause serious damage to an asphalt highway.
