There are many services to the elderly available throughout the United States. Many services offered are provided at no cost to the senior, as they are federal, state, or local services. Sometimes, volunteer groups offer free services to seniors which can make it a possibly for a senior to live independently at home.

There are many community based services for seniors. Adult Day Centers are among the most popular type of senior service available. Adult Day Centers give caregivers a break from care giving, and they provide seniors with services including health assessments, social interaction, meals, and care for people with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Another senior service is meal houses, also known as Nutrition Sites, which serves meals to the elderly. Seniors can get these meals at senior centers, schools, congregations or faith-based services, or housing projects. Meals on Wheels, another senior food service, brings food to seniors who live independently at home. Meals on Wheels is a nationwide program that allows seniors to receive healthy meals all week long.

Senior centers are a great ...
... socializing place for seniors. Senior Centers also offer meals at noontime on the weekdays that seniors can take advantage of. Many seniors like going to senior centers to socialize and to communicate with like-minded individuals. There are many transportation services offered by nursing homes, local agencies, civic groups, religious organizations, and hospitals. Some offer free transportation and others set fees based on a sliding scale baked on income.

Some services have eligibility that a senior must meet to take advantage of the program services. You can check with your local agencies, churches or congregations, phone books under the public service listings, city assistance program offices, healthy agencies, doctors, family services, hospital social workers, senior insurance plans, Area Agency on Aging, previous employer or union representative, public health department, social security office, or your local ombudsman. The Area Agency on Aging helps seniors to find services in their area, and helps seniors to find the best services to fit their needs. Geriatric Care Managers may also help seniors in their aging journey while searching for senior services.

Seniors living at home independently may choose to receive in-home care services such as homecare helpers or homecare healthcare services. If your loved one is aging independently at home, it may be a good idea to look into senior calling services. These services provide a daily calling service to the aging adult. You can find these services in your area by calling the local police non-emergency department to see if they offer this senior daily calling service. When the senior is out-of-town or in the hospital, it is important to suspend the service for that time period, thus you will need to notify the service about their absence.

The calling service has a computer that calls the senior at a designated time each day, and if the senior does not answer, the senior will receive a phone call from a person. If the senior does not respond to the phone calls, people are available to check on the senior if necessary. If the senior does not answer the door, emergency services will be dispatched to the home of the senior.

Another helpful service available for seniors is volunteer visiting programs. These programs are often run be church groups, community groups, social services, or local senior assist groups. Most programs have trained volunteers who will visit a senior a few times per week in the seniors home, at a senior care facility, or a retirement home. The volunteer will provide companionship for the older adult, and they will be checking-in on the senior to make sure that everything is okay with them. Seniors who live far from family members or close friends may benefit from having this service. Seniors need to have close connections with people to maintain their well-being.

Senior services help seniors to age gracefully, happily, and helpfully. These services can be found throughout the United States, and are available to aging adults. To find out more about costs or more details, you will want to contact the local Area Agency on Aging for more information. Seniors who stay connected and cared for will help to enhance their lives greatly.
