Ah, Cochise season. Moved by a full day climbing trip, we loaded the car, going around in packs, ropes, harnesses, equipment, and a package of the summit with a couple liters little water, a camera, and snacks. We stopped for burritos on our way out of town, as is the ritual, and headed down the road, carefully put down the breakfast with the sauce while listening to This American Life. I love Wednesdays. A blessing to carry Five Fingers KSO for the trip: they are ideal if you are the type of person who likes to sit uneasy with his legs crossed on the seat of the car, or put your feet on the dashboard, or any number of seating configurations that may or may not be annoying to the driver.

At the last minute we picked a couple of routes of various lengths at the top out of Towners, I never had been, and Logan had visited only once a few years ago. The east side of Cochise Stronghold is beautiful, a mountain of guns and small but strong songs with speckled granite vaults high mountains like marbles scattered. We parked and walked through the ...
... Chihuahuan Desert Classic, oaks and stunted grass and agave sharp, shining through the route non-existent, as all roads climber, goes up as fast as possible, and we are in the base of the steep and a little white dome.

Most lines are very aesthetic Cochise, as a result of cracks or large dihedral laybacks sweeping or open. The output of the dome of Towners is mostly blank. While not as exciting to watch, this type of slab climbing is magical to me: not easy to hold on to, and feet balanced on the edges of small, every millimeter or vacuum protrudes slightly, the conclusion must come to is that supernatural forces are what keeps the rock climber. The first rule of slab climbing is not to think of slab climbing. The moment you get nervous, it falls off.

Logan is rope and ready to go when you check the route description so we know how to get out of the top of the rock mass. There are two ways to get down: a vicious and long walk from the top or a double-rope climbing. We have only one string. The twins are resting in the closet at home. Luckily we FiveFingers and headlights, the essential elements for the return trip.

So Logan is about to enter the rock when I get back in my harness for climbing shoes, and is not there. My heart sinks. In our haste and disorder, my cat's feet slipped under the car seat and then forgotten.

Classic steadfast in my optimism, I guess my FiveFingers climbing the top rope can not be that hard, sure I could fall sometimes, but I am always following can not fall that far. So play in the bottom of the rock for a while, trying to go around the slab at the start. It is not easy. The rubber sole that is rounded around each toe does not let me chew on micro edges. My feet are strong enough to cup divots in the rock, but this is very stressful for my feet and calves, and probably every move requires twice the tension in the body than usual. Is the angle of the foot, really: In order to get more contact with the rock, I'm trying to turn my toes up more sharply, which means you can not pull so hard on the wall, which means I'll need handles well, and this route is not going to happen? This route is disappearing hands and feet.

There is no talk allowed in this route. Once it starts, you have to reach the top, there's no bail. I would have been willing to try a shot and maybe more, but I was not willing to commit to 500 feet of fear, waiting for my stubby fingers wrapped around the rubber does not stick to budge. I think go barefoot, but the granite rough soles break my darling. We realize it's time to go to other adventures.

The hike down is really fun, with lots of stop and the shuffling and explores the jumble of rocks stacked in the barrel. When we return to the city, we decided to go to a Cross Fit class, where my Vibram 5 Fingers are put to use running and doing Olympic lifts and box jumps. It is a shoe that can be done with almost any activity, except those that require some friction sticky and a square edge.
