The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is one of the two Corgi breeds originally used as drover and farm dog. This breed has a small and powerful stature, with great endurance and speed. Long and low to the ground, this little dog weighs between 25-34 pounds for females, and 30-38 pounds for males; stands 10.5-12.5 inches tall.

Coat

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a double-coated breed with straight, harsh, mid-length, and water-resistant topcoat, with soft and dense undercoat. Their coats come in various colors such as red, brindle, blue, black, sable, black and tan, black and brindle, black and tan, and merle.

Activity

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is generally a low-maintenance breed when it comes to exercise. One or two walks daily is enough for them, and they do not act out destructively if they don't get to spend time outdoors often enough.

Primarily bred for herding cattle and sheep, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi makes an excellent companion and is competitive in dog agility and sheepdog trials. As with many other herding breeds, the Cardigan Corgi is highly intelligent, athletic and active dogs. Known to have a personality of a big dog, this breed is devoted and affectionate companions that are responsible and alert protectors. Typically a one-man-dog, they tend to be cautious of strangers and reserve their affection for a selected few they are familiar with.

Overview

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is bred to guard farms, hunt vermin, and drive cattle. A relatively rare breed, their long and low stature makes them roll out of their way of kicking cows.

Care

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is relatively easy to care for. Brushing twice a week is enough to remove old dead hair, which keeps them clean and minimize shedding. Extra care should be given during shedding season, though. This keeps hair from getting on the furniture, or all over the house.

With weather-resistant double coats, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi do not need frequent bathing. They are generally free from doggy odors, and regular bathing may bring out dog odor, and removes the natural oils that keep this breed's coat free from bad odors.

Training

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is very attentive and good listeners as puppies. Therefore, training is easier during puppyhood. Due to their high intelligence, they are not difficult to train as they pick up on new commands quickly. Early socialization should be done to prevent hostility and apprehension with friendly humans and other animals.

Character

A little yet sturdy breed, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is versatile in both mind and body. They have great strength, speed and endurance. This breed is not only powerful, but trustworthy, reliable, affectionate and loyal as well.
