The inflammation of the sinuses preventing the regular drainage of the sinus is called Sinusitis. The condition is symptomatic of blockage in the nasal passage coupled with chronic soreness that becomes the cause of severe sinus infection.

Some of its more obvious indications are

Aches and soreness in the cheeks, forehead and between the eye
Waking up with a headache coupled with a running nose or a blocked nasal passage
Intermittent fever, tiredness, inflamed throat along with an aching upper jaw
Our sinuses consist of hollow cavities in various portions of our frontal head which is made up of our face. These are little pockets underneath our facial bones, inside our cheek bones, under the nasal bridge and directly over and under the eyes. These spaces are filled with mucous and serves as a sieve for bacteria and other dust particles in the air that we breathe. These cavities are interconnected with the nasal passage via a membranic lining that is layered in mucous. Inflammation or soreness of this vital drainage pipeline can be a source of severe discomfort and a incubator of bacteria ...

Categorized into acute, chronic and recurrent, sinusitis can last from three to eight week to a persistent infection that recurs several times a year. Often mistaken for a cold, it usually stays longer and has a larger variety of symptoms.
Before it becomes a full blown infection sinusitis starts as a routine swelling in the sinuses. This is the reason why individuals suffering from allergies, asthma or those who regularly swim are more prone to the condition. Even a common cold can become a full blown case of acute sinusitis. Another very common means of contraction is the over dependence on a nasal spray. In this case the infection can spiral out of control as the cause and effect fall into a vicious cycle.

Treatment for acute sinusitis fall under two categories. The first comprises of antibiotics for infection, saline washes for swelling, decongestants to lighten blockage and over the counter pain medication like acetaminophen to relieve the symptoms like headaches and other pains. Drinking loads of fluids; cold and hot, rest, hot compress and use of a humidifier will also make the patient feel a lot better.
In extreme conditions your doctor might recommend sinus surgery however it is not a very effective cure and may not work on a most types of sinusitis and is therefore a last resort. A better idea is to prevent the infection by steering clear of anything that can cause cold or allergic reactions. If they occur periodic rinsing of the nasal passage in a saline solution will also do loads to prevent sinusitis
