Best men are like boxes of chocolates. They come in all sizes and packages. The best man can be the brother or the friend of the groom. He may be the son or even the father of the groom. In fact the best man may be a woman and be instead the best buddy of the groom. All of these variations mean that the speeches they give will vary. A brother, for instance will be able to tell stories of what the groom was like at home as a child. His best friend, on the other hand, will certainly know things about him that perhaps the bride had better not hear.

It is very important for a best man to be careful about what he says because people often feel fraught on a wedding day and something that would usually make them laugh might upset them instead. So any best man has to choose what he says even though he may be dying to tell everyone about the holiday he had with the groom and a team of lady footballers. That's one story the bride may not want to hear on her wedding day. That is not to say that he should not make people laugh. That's almost obligatory for the best man but his humour should be gentle humour.

The best man's ...
... speech is usually the highlight of the wedding breakfast so he should give it a lot of thought and a lot of preparation. He should speak of his relationship with the groom and of his feeling for him. He may say that the groom is the best friend anyone ever had and give an instance of his kindness. He should, of course, tell the bride how beautiful she is and how lucky he thinks his friend is to have married such a wonderful woman. If the best man is the son of the groom he should mention what a wonderful dad he has been and how much his happiness means to him.

Best man's speeches should be positive and speak of a happy future. He should certainly express his best wishes to the couple. Being a best man, however, means he also has another responsibility and that is his responsibility to the bridesmaids. The groom will undoubtedly toast those bridesmaids and it is up to the best man to reply to that toast. In that reply he should insist that they are the gilding on the wedding photographs and that he is extremely lucky that his duties mean he has to dance with every single one of them.
