Damask Home Decor - Damask Fabric - Beyond The Black And White
In recent seasons, damask fabric has been most frequently and prominently displayed in patterns and colors of black and white damask. However, damask fabric is much more versatile than this one depiction of it. Damask fabric can be constructed of silk, wool, linen, cotton, or synthetic fibers. Pure damask is constructed solely from silk. Its satin warp and its sateen weft characterize damask fabric. The figures or design that is depicted on the fabric is the weft, and the background of the fabric is the warp. Depending upon the complexity of the print or scene depicted on the fabric, twill or other biding weaves may be incorporated into the fabric.
The most common depictions woven into damask fabrics feature floral patterns, fruits, simple domestic scenes, scenes of animals, or intricate geometric patterns. It is believed that the origins of damask began in the Middle East and the Orient. In the twelfth century, the city of Damascus in Israel became a prominent manufacturing and trading city and route between the Orient and Europe. The name ...
... damask is derived from the town of Damascus. During the Renaissance, damask was used to construct elegant vestment garments for those who were members of the church.
There are various methods in which damask is incorporated into a home. Commonly, damask weaves are used in table clothes or for bedding purposes. These damask items are usually constructed with linen, cotton, or synthetic fibers, featuring damask patterns. Despite the material it is made from, the beauty and appearance of true damask is achieved through the weaving of the warp and weft that, when set at contrasting angles, reflect light in different manners according to the position of the viewer. The more intricate the scene depicted upon the damask, the more beautiful the object constructed from the damask appears. Damask is rather similar to brocade in its appearance; however, the process that is used to create it is much more intricate.
Damask is distinguishable from other factors by a variety of characteristics. Its intricate patterns and figures are the most prominent characteristics. However, other identifying traits include its luster, its durability, and the fact that it is reversible. Additionally, it shed dirt, and it launders better than most other types of fabrics. Damask is a highly popular choice of fabric when it comes to interior decorating. For a variety of reasons, it is obvious why.
