Beyond Touch Therapy
Among our senses, the sense of touch is the least appreciated. Yet, studies in pediatrics swear by the power of touch and how a simple touch can calm babies and comfort children. Even among adults, a simple tap on a shoulder can signify encouragement.
Eastern medicine firmly believes in the power of touch. A closer scrutiny of the philosophies on which Eastern massage treatments are based on speak of energy transfers. As proof, masseuses and masseurs state that after massaging clients, they would feel spent, while those receiving the massage feel invigorated.
The medical community is still skeptical of touch therapy, believing it is based on Eastern mystical/religious practices, rather than conventional medicine. This perhaps is the cause of the slow acceptance of alternative healing methods and therapies.
The problem with explaining Eastern healing practices to the mainstream medical community is that the medical community feels it is necessary to distinguish between maladies caused by the body and those caused by the mind. On the other hand, Eastern healing practices are firmly based on the mind-body connection, ...
... and on the idea that an enlightened mind can bring about a healing in the body.
Take the case of thetahealing a relatively newly type of alternative healing practice. Critics are dismissive of its healing potential because they deem it nothing more than a hodge-podge of various mystical healing beliefs. These critics are especially wary of theta practitioners' use of visualization to treat diseases.
Perhaps the real trouble the critics have over thetahealing is its use of the terms that are commonly used in other healing methods. This healing method borrows heavily from terms used in naturopathic medicine -- a field of alternative medicine which is still being dismissed by the medical community.
Thetahealing is attracting adherents from all walks of life, with a good number of them seeking training to become practitioners of this healing art themselves. Some of them seek higher learning because they have personally benefitted from said healing method themselves, having been cured of an illness. It is reasonable to expect that this number will continue to rise.
