Hazard Identification - An Absolute Must!
Occupational hazards can cause serious harm and even fatal injuries and mishaps. A work hazard can be defined as anything that has the potential to cause harm to workers and employees, damage to environment or property and loss to process.
However, in accordance with the United States, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), an occupational hazard is primarily anything that has the potential or the ability to cause harm, that in turn is associated with a condition or an activity or that if left uncontrolled, can even lead to serious and fatal injuries, mishaps or illnesses.
Furthermore, a work hazard can also be defined as a source or a situation that has the potential to cause harm in terms of human injury or illness, damage to the workplace environment, damage to private or public property or a unique combination of these.
So the key to reducing the risk that's associated with an occupational hazard is a 'hazard identification plan'. Firstly, every hazard identification plan must begin with a procedural walk-around of the work site. Next the workers must be questioned as to whether they themselves ...
... are aware of any lurking and dangerous hazards. Once every possible hazard has been identified, they then need to be assessed and controlled in order to ensure that they do not pose as a high level risk to the workers or employees. However, the procedures and regulations that may be needed to be taken differ drastically from one industry to another.
You also need to know that there are a variety of hazard identification methods. Present below is a list that highlights the 3 main methods of hazard recognition. They are:
1.Work Permitting: This method basically involves asking oneself a series of questions and making a check list, in order to assure that no hazard is overlooked. The checklist is usually an analysis of oxygen sufficiency and the presence of toxic gas.
2.Equipment Inspections: Equipment inspections must be created, organized and planned. Its aim is to check the guarding, equipment conditions, safety protective equipment, PPE etc.
3.Pre-Use Analysis: This method can be applied before any new equipment, new piece of machinery, instrumentation device, plant facility, personal protective equipment, machine, tool etc is used.
Overall, we can conclude that occupational hazards are dangerous to humans as well as the environment. Hence, hazard identification and recognition is a must, in order to control, reduce and eliminate these hazards. Thus, these safety courses are tremendously beneficial.
