Medical Research - For A Healthier, Smarter Life
The world has progressed so much that diseases are disappearing at the same mortality rate that they were associated with. This is thanks to immense strides taken in medical research. The field of medical research is vast and has bifurcated itself thanks to numerous disciplines and specializations involved. Compiling all the specializations, what exactly is medical research?
According to specialists, medical research is the basic research, applied research, or translational researches conducted to aid and support the knowledge improvement, research and development in the field of medicine. Medical research can be divided into two general categories - The first is the evaluation of new treatments for both safety and efficacy in what are termed clinical trials. This is also termed as preclinical research if its goal is specifically to elaborate knowledge for the development of new therapeutic strategies. The second are all other research that contributes to the development of new treatments. A new paradigm to biomedical research termed translational research, which focuses on iterative feedback loops between the basic and ...
... clinical research domains to accelerate knowledge translation from the bedside to the bench, and back again.
Over the past century, major developments in medical research have caused the overall longevity in human lives. Among the major benefits that have developed, the world has seen vaccines for measles and polio, insulin treatment for diabetes, classes of antibiotics for treating a host of maladies, medication for high blood pressure, improved treatments for AIDS, statins and other treatments for atherosclerosis, new surgical techniques such as microsurgery, and increasingly successful treatments for cancer etc.
The human genome project has seeded many new, beneficial tests and treatments that have taken up previously incurable diseases on a war-footing. Many challenges remain, however, including the appearance of antibiotic resistance and the obesity epidemic. These challenges have pushed researchers to delve deeper into the science of medicine and advance.
Current medical advancements have improved the quality of life for millions of people around the world. Rapid developments have also increased the effectiveness and have reduced the cost of some medical treatments that are required by most of the people around the world. The cost of essential medical care has also been researched into submission thus making it affordable to every person around the world. Medical research has thus made the world a safer place to live.
