Will It Be A White Christmas This Year
Who isn't dreaming of a white Christmas? Ok, apart from those who have to perhaps venture out, how can you not want to peer out of the window first thing on Christmas morning and see the snow falling? Bing Crosby sang about it and many bets are placed on whether the UK will wake up to a covering of the white stuff on Christmas Day too.
As a nation we are obsessed about our weather, so it comes as no surprise that bets are already being taken for the prospect (or anticipation) of snow falling for Christmas 2010. However, in order to qualify as a 'White Christmas' a single snow flake must be officially observed to have fallen in the 24 hours of 25th December, which can include being mixed in with rain and snow.
So do you like to have a novelty flutter on a single flake falling? Betting on whether it will snow at Christmas can be a bit of harmless fun, although some do take it rather seriously. One betting agency has already taken six four-figure bets on the chances of a White Christmas. If a single flake of snow should happen to fall, then they could be facing a payout of over £100,000! With reports of wintry ...
... weather on its way, it ‘s little wonder that the odds are being cut. So what are the chances of this year being a white Christmas?
Snow rarely falls at temperatures above 4'C. The average UK temperature for December is around 0ËšC, so who knows! Nevertheless, thanks to the internet you can keep up to date with the latest 'White Christmas' forecasts.
These will be updated on a regular basis in the run up to Christmas Day. With just over a month to go, according to long range forecasts the risk for snow for the UK is above average at the moment. So will this cause a mad panic at the supermarkets as people rush to stock up on essentials for fear of being snowed in for days? Hmm, mind you everyone does this at Christmas anyway, so I guess it ‘ll be nothing new there then!
So whether we have a picture postcard White Christmas or not, at least you'll have plenty of supplies in and Christmas television to watch!
