House cleaning can be a stressful activity and, if we're not careful, it's easy to lose patience with other members of the household, be they family members or flat-sharing friends. Give yourself the best chance of getting through the domestic cleaning chores without ending up having a row with your nearest and/or dearest by using at least some of the following tips:

Draw up a rota. It may seem like the sort of thing you thought you'd left behind when you were a student, but a domestic cleaning rota can really take the stress out of things. Make sure that everyone involved is present when you draw up the rota, or at least have a meeting about what everyone is prepared to do. Some people have an aversion to particular tasks, but it's unlikely that everyone has the same aversion, so let those who can't bear the thought of bathroom cleaning in a shared house take responsibility for another area, and those who hate kitchen grease stay out of the kitchen on cleaning day! A rota doesn't have to be absolutely rigid, or involve whole-house cleaning - you could agree to all spend one day a week cleaning a room each if you prefer ...
... that option. And if one person is away or otherwise unavailable, they can easily make up for lost time beforehand or afterwards, or swap chores with someone else as long as that suits both parties.

Agree on the domestic cleaning products you want to use. Some people may have sensitivities to certain products, and it's not hard to find alternatives so as not to cause discomfort, either ethical or physical, so be sympathetic. Go shopping as a group for the house cleaning products you need, or have a list and kitty and take turns to do the shopping when products need replacing or refilling.

Be tidy. If you leave a room in a mess the day before someone else is scheduled to do the domestic cleaning duties, you can pretty much guarantee they'll be irritated by your messiness. House cleaning shouldn't be any more hassle than it needs to be. Stay tidy and stay friends!

Be grateful. When someone clears up after you and it's not their turn, say thank you. It might seem obvious, but a little gratitude goes a long way. So does flexibility. If one of you is off colour, doing their domestic cleaning chores will allow them to relax and recover properly, and earn you brownie points at the same time. And it means they owe you one, so that when it's your turn to be sick, you get the same sympathetic treatment. Suddenly, house cleaning becomes an opportunity for recognition and getting ahead of the game. Before you know it, you'll all be competing for points. But don't let the competition get out of hand, or you might find yourselves heading for that domestic again - for all the wrong reasons!
