The Story of The Farm at South Mountain

The Farm's vision of sustainability was conceived by Dwight Heard (benefactor of the Heard Museum in downtown Phoenix) nearly a century ago. In the early 1920s, Heard acquired a large parcel of land and then subdivided the property into two-acre parcels which he sold with the distinct purpose of promoting self-sufficiency. A cow was even included in the then-whopping purchase price of $1,150, as were fifty chickens.

In keeping with Heard's environmentally friendly philosophy, the ten acre site just south of Southern and 32nd Street in Phoenix was planted with 100 pecan trees. For over 40 years, this towering grove was nurtured by a retired cattleman by the name of Skeeter Coverdale, but ultimately harvesting 5,000 pounds of nuts every year became too much work for Skeeter and the property was eventually sold. A believer in supporting independently owned businesses, the current owner is A. Wayne Smith. At The Farm at South Mountain, Smith has managed to preserve the area's serene sense of rural tranquility so refreshingly reminiscent of days gone by.
