The sun has always been around, so has solar thermal but what has been lacking is the effective and extensive application of it within our daily lives. With the increasing need of switching over to renewable energy sources, more and more people are actively thinking of solar energy and solar thermal applications.

For a novice, solar thermal energy is the process of channelizing the solar energy in order to produce heat. This heat can be used to heat water, swimming pools and even areas. Solar thermal is mainly related to collection and transfer of sun's heat which can be utilized for a special purpose ranging from pool heaters or for industrial applications.

A solar thermal system comprises of a collector which contains copper pipework to ensure that the heat is collected in the collector. Accompanying the pipework is a lightweight aluminum absorber sheet which allows optimum heat transfer. Apart from this, a solar thermal system includes a circulating pump which transfers the heat into a water storage cylinder. The cylinder contains a coiled heat exchanger which ensures that the water within it gets heated ...

The advantages of a solar thermal system are that you can get water in an eco friendly manner through renewable energy and lower your energy bills considerably. Solar Thermal can be utilized at the maximum at during summer months for you can get almost 80 - 90% of hot water. During the winter months, it caters to almost 10 - 15% of hot water requirements. This means solar thermal systems can be used to supplement other hot water systems and thereby reduce energy bills to a great extent.

The cost towards installing and using a solar thermal system can be considered as a buffer against hike in energy prices in the future and also enabling you to enjoy lower energy bills presently as well as in future. Moreover, the use of the solar heating is acceptable under the Renewable Heat Incentive as proposed by the UK government.

Lastly, you could bear in mind a few important and useful points related to solar heating systems. The solar thermal system can be used for hot water purposes and not for central heating. The property on which you wish to install the same should be your own and does not face any restrictions related to listed buildings or located in a conservation area. Apart from this they should have ideal space for panel installation which is sufficiently wide and be facing South East or South West. Moreover, these panels should not be shielded by buildings, trees, etc.

Another equally important is that a task such as this has to be undertaken by a qualified and accredited expert who can do a well accomplished installing task of the same. At no point, the installing of solar heating system should be tried out as a do-it-yourself task.
