Of all the types of guides available for World of Warcraft, gold guides are one of the most in demand and riskiest purchases. Think about it, can you do much in the game without some sort of gold nest egg to back you up? Not really, unless you count sitting in Dalaran and making poor jokes in Trade Chat. Of course, I brought up that gold guides are a bit of a risky purchase. This is because the realms can be just so different from one another. On one, a particular object may be in high demand and a great money maker. Meanwhile, on another server a single person holds an iron grip on that item and strictly controls the price of it. Also, it should give a way to tell what is selling and what isn't, either through an add on or via some knowledge of how the auction house works.

An off shoot of the auction house method is the crafting method. In this version, you will create items to sell to either a vendor or on the auction house. The main benefit of this method is that it doesn't require as much start up money as playing the auction house does. But, it doesn't give nearly as much either. This method is generally used as a ramp up for moving on the playing the auction house and shouldn't be relied on by the gold guide for the entire process. This method is also most subject to the wildly varying realm economies. While an item may still turn a profit on one realm, it may not do as well as on others where it is in lower demand.

The final method is the farm method. This is the most stable in that it cuts out a majority of the variables that the realm can provide. Instead, it is just you and the countless mobs you will kill while building up your bankroll. While this method is the most stable, it can still be upset by a few things. For one, some classes are just better at farming than others. Classes that has strong AOE effects for example excel at farming. Also, someone trying to farm the same area as you may disturb your cash flow as they take mobs that you could have otherwise killed.

How can you tell what type of gold guide you're considering? Typically, the gold guides will give themselves away on their site. If the site say any level or no monsters killed, it is typically either an auction house playing or crafting guide. If possible, look at a gold guide's free sample to try to figure out how it works. If that fails, there is always the guarantee to fall back on.
