Love it or hate it, home cleaning is a chore that needs doing on a regular basis, whether you choose to do it yourself or whether you choose to hire professional home cleaning services. For most people who are either working full time or those who just cannot bear the thought of cleaning up, the latter choice comes as a huge relief. However, while hiring someone to do it for you is a great option, not everybody wants to have a non-family member come into the home and witness the entire family's untidiness, personal habits and other skeletons in the cupboard!

So, if you're one of those people who would really rather keep the domestic cleaning in the family, what's the best way to go about it? How can you organise your time (and that of other family members) so that the home cleaning is done with the minimum of fuss, and the least possible family tension?

Firstly, it's important to organise yourself. You can either do a whole house clean once a week or fortnight, and get all the domestic cleaning out of the way in one go, or you could split the tasks up by, say, rooms, or floors, and do these one at a time. Alternatively ...
... you could vacuum one day, dust the next, polish a day later, etc. The only problem with this latter method is that you need to keep the house tidy on all the days during which the home cleaning will be done, but this could be seen as a distinct advantage, as it provides an incentive for constant neatness! Either way, have a schedule and stick to it as rigidly as possible, especially if the home cleaning chores involve more than one person. If one of you slips, it gives the other/s an excuse to do the same, and it's a slippery slope from there to the point when nothing gets done!

Secondly, organise your equipment. Make sure you have all the kit you will need for quick, effective home cleaning to hand, ideally in one place, and with a handy tool box or similar you can carry all you need with you as you move around the home. Launder dusters as soon as you have used them, so that they are ready for the next domestic cleaning day, and replace polishes, chemicals and other liquids before you use the last drop, to avoid a last-minute rush to the local supermarket, grocers or DIY store.

Thirdly, whether you're doing the whole house or just one room at a time, make sure you work your home cleaning magic from the top of the room/s downwards. That way the dust and dirt from the ceilings, door tops and shelves falls down to the floor as you go, and will be collected when you vacuum or otherwise clean the carpet, tiles or other flooring. Do it the other way round, with the floor cleaned and polished first, and you'll soon see the error of your domestic cleaning ways!
