... is shaped by the use of electrical discharges or sparks. This is in contrast to how parts are shaped using traditional lathes with rotating spindles that house die cutters in its shaft. In other words, in most machining applications, material is literally cut away from the work piece by being drilled, carved, hole-punched, planed or otherwise cut. .

In a Sodick Edm however, the material is removed from the work piece because rapidly recurrent electronic discharges are being bounced back and forth between two electrodes that have been separated by a die-electric liquid. This die-electric liquid is subject to an electric voltage, and one of the electrodes is the “tool” (tool electrode, or simply electrode) while the other is actually the work piece (work piece electrode). The distance between the two is modified. When it gets reduced, the electric field in the volume between them becomes greater than the strength of the die-electricâ€which then breaksâ€allowing current to flow directly between the two electrodes. This is a phenomenon known as the breakdown of a capacitor (or condenser). Your Sodick EDM thus removes material from both electrodes by introducing a new liquid die-electric to the inter-electrode volume, washing away debris (called flushing).
