Rubber stamps have been in use for over 150 years and came about following the founding of the rubber making process by Mr Goodyear, back in 1839. In their earliest forms they were fashioned from rubber applied to wood block carvings. During second half of the nineteenth and into the early twentieth centuries, various Americans worked on techniques to develop the rubber stamp as we know it today, although it is thought that the invention can be attributed specifically to a James Orton Woodruff.

Many companies went on to develop the process and discover ways in which this method of marking items and document could be used. Techniques were also developed to provide an internal ink pad for ‘self-inking' stamps and for ‘permanent' pigmentation to provide pre-inked stamps without the need for an ink pad at all.

Today, stamps are made out of rubber or polymer, to customers' requirements. Rubber tends to be used more for business purposes, while polymer is a little harder and more suited to stamping fine, intricate lines used in craft work. Due to the transparency of polymer, these dies can be mounted on Perspex ...
... for accurate positioning of images.

Self inking stamps are primarily used for repetitive and speed dependent work. These stamps are manufactured with a polymer or rubber face or ‘die' which is attached to the die plate. This rotates through 180° when the stamp is depressed to make the impression and, when released, returns to the position to ensure the stamp is in contact with the renewable ink pad.

Pre-inked stamps are particularly useful for quick stamping without the mess of an ink pad. They contain a reservoir of very fine ink that is fed on to the die and that is sufficient for thousands of impressions.

Rubber stamps for business usually show the name and other contact details and/or a corporate logo. Some will have one line messages, eg for inserting the payee of a cheque. Others will have movable parts that allow the user to adjust the date or the wording of the stamp. They are used to date incoming mail, as well as to denote special handling of the document.

Custom rubber stamps can be ordered from stationers or direct from the manufacturer, with many now using on-line stores. Options will be the size of the die, wording, design, style of font, the insertion of a logo or other image and ink colour.

The uses for rubber stamps are wide and varied and nowadays people are turning ‘rubber stamping' into an art form, with beautiful designs and ink colours. One might think that in the digital age, they would be a dying requirement but they seem to be just as popular and as much a part of everyday use in businesses as they ever were.
