Piracetam is a nootropic drug available in the market under various brand names. It was first synthesised in 1964 due to its ability to boost mental functioning. Piracetam is prescribed by the doctors mainly for myoclonus but is also widely use as off label application. Through the various studies and test cases performed in past, it has been noted that Piracetam helps in increasing performance on a wide range of cognitive tasks among dyslexic children, though it is believed that piracetam reflects the enhancement of cross hemispheric communication rather than improving the condition which has caused dyslexia. It is also used some times to treat brain damage caused by alcohol consumption and hypoxia. During the various clinical trials it has shown positive outputs in treatment of post stroke aphasia, epilepsy, dementia and myoclonus.

Piracetam is believed to establish a connection there by promoting the flow of information between right and left hemispheres of the brain and increase the activity of corpus callosum. It is very similar to molecular structure ...
... of amino acids and is reported to be an intelligence booster and central nervous system stimulant. The effect of piracetam increases when taken along with choline, hydergine, Centrophenoxine and DMAE. Especially when taken with choline it shows greater improvement in memory. According to one of the study conducted on mice, piracetam increases the number of cholinergic receptors in the brain which shows that it has regenerative effect on the nervous system.

It works by influencing neuronal and vascular functions along with cognitive functions without acting as sedative or stimulant. It acts on ion channels thus leads to non specific increased neuron excitability. It has been proposed that piracetam increases the blood flow and oxygen consumption in parts of the brain. According to researchers, Piracetam improves the function of neurotransmitter acetylcholine receptors which are implicated in memory processes. It is also known to increase the permeability of cell membrane. During the trial on rats, it was found that piracetam increases the oxygen consumption of brain there by increasing the activity of adenylate kinase.

It is available in the market in the form of 800 mg tablets or capsules and is also not much expensive. The recommend dosage is 2 -12 pills every day. The most effective dosage is 4.8 to 9.6 grams (divided into three daily doses) for blood clotting, coagulation and vasospastic disorders. Piracetam have shown very few side effects which includes anxiety, insomnia, headache, agitation, nervousness, irritability and tremor. Headache can increase after taking large doses of piracetam by co administration of acetylcholine biosynthetic precursor or drug depicting cholinergic effects.

It is mandatory to discuss with related physician or health care officer if the patient is having allergy to piracetam or other chemical drugs. Also it is recommended that the patient taking this medicine should not have heart valve disease or high blood pressure. Consult doctor if the female patient is planning to become pregnant during the treatment or is breast feeding.
