From one do-it-yourselfer to another, let me start by saying you should probably get professional help with this project. Although water heater installation can be done by an amateur handyman, it is not your average repair job and is notorious for being a difficult and dangerous task. There are many experts in the field out there whom you can call or visit for counsel or help if you screw up, or you can visit my site, www.patharrisplumbing.com, for additional tips and advice. That said, here is how to perform a water heater installation by yourself.

Before the water heater installation can be performed we need to disconnect the old heater. It's important to shut off the gas or electricity that powers your old heater before meddling with any of its connections. Once this is done, find the drain valve and drain all the water out of it. Step back, it could be hot. If you can't figure out where the drain valve is, just turn on a hot water faucet somewhere in the house and leave it on until the water starts to come out cold. This will empty the old water heater.

Use an appropriately sized wrench to disconnect all the ...
... pipes from your old water heater. These may still be full of boiling hot water so be very careful and go slowly. As you remove them, try to remember which pipe was connected to which part of the heater and label or tag each one accordingly to help you with your new water heater installation.

Once it is empty of water and free of all pipes and connections, you may dispose of your old water heater. Different States may have different laws about proper disposal of these so make sure to do your research ahead of time so you don't find yourself in trouble. If there are no specific laws in your State, you may still want to recycle your old water heater or even sell it for scrap metal.

Now that the area is cleared and ready for your new water heater, use a dolly to transport the new heater to its new location. Some of the parts may be fragile so if you need a friend's help with this, don't be afraid to ask. It's better to get a bit of extra help than to ruin your brand new machine. Arrange your new water heater in place so that hooking it up is as easy for you as possible. If it is similar to your old one, you should already be familiar with the layout of the pipes and connections and where each belongs, and installation should be easy for you. If your new piece is too different from your old one, you may need the help of a professional.

Once you are sure that everything is connected properly, you may turn the gas or electricity back on. Remember to make sure your hands are completely dry and you have good, rubber soled shoes protecting your feet before interacting with electricity. When everything is on again, go back and listen around your new heater for leaks. It's important to double check that everything is running well. As a final test, turn on the hot water somewhere in your house and wait for it to heat up.
