Office 2010 Applications

Now that Microsoft has released Office 2010, I thought it would be worth explaining a little about the two different versions, and how it affects users OrderWise.
The processors are 64-bit is becoming the standard for systems ranging from servers to desktops. 64-bit systems can use more virtual memory and physical 32-bit systems. This allows users to work with datasets much larger than they could before, and analyze and solve large computational problems.
Microsoft Office 2010 introduces native 64-bit versions of Microsoft Office products to take advantage of this increased capacity.
All this sounds wonderful to run large reports, but it poses a problem. As 64 and 32-bit applications are completely different architectures, which are inherently incompatible. Microsoft attempted to get around these problems by using WOW64. WOW64 is the x86 emulator that allows Windows-based applications to run on 32-bit 64-bit Windows systems. In theory this should allow all COM add-ins 32 bits are used for full operation in Office 2010 ...
... 64 bits.
Unfortunately, the data connection between the current database and Excel OrderWise v6 (FoxPro ODBC Driver) is one of the applications that do not work in this emulation mode - and as such, will only run on version 32-bit Office 2010.
This means that if you want to upgrade to Office 2010, you need to use 32-bit version if you want to continue using Orderwise reports. If you are using a 64-bit version of Windows, this should not be a problem, as the installation of 32 bits is the default on all architectures, and Microsoft recommends that you install only 64-bit version of Office if they need work spreadsheet regularly with more than 2 GB in size. For more information, visit http://peaksoftwares.com.
