In the recent months, there have been several reports of sewage spills or leaks in various places around Auburn. Last March, twenty-four rooms at Regal Inn Express in Auburn were closed down due to raw sewage and molds forming on the walls. When inspectors from the health and fire department entered the rooms, a foul smell reeked from the walls. Due to this, the motel was closed down and was given a warning. Another sewage problem occurred last week in a wastewater treatment plant. Due to lightning striking the machinery in the plant, the power shut off and led to one hundred thirty five thousand gallons of toxic waste streaming into Mobile Bay.

Sewage cleanup in Auburn has been progressing due to the growing number of sewage-related incidents around the city. Just last week, four thousand two hundred gallons of sewage waste spilled into Flat Rock Creek due to sewage break in the pipes. Even if the break was fixed shortly after, the grueling task of cleaning the sewage leak is still on-going. With the recent BP oil spill that is contaminating the water in the vicinity of the Gulf of Mexico and Mobile Bay, locals of Auburn ...
... are expressing their concern regarding the crisis.

CNN has been covering the crisis daily and has made an extensive investigation of the seriousness of the matter. Scientists have shown how the oil can possibly damage the micro-organisms in the ocean as well as the reefs and corals. Fishermen in Auburn are losing their jobs due to the oil spill and BP seems to have no plans of cleaning up until the oil reaches the beaches. BP thinks that it would be easier to clean up the oil once they have reached shallow waters. However, local authorities and residents think that this is not even an option for them.

This oil spill is one of the biggest environmental problems the United States has faced in history. Moreover, this will probably be the most massive sewage cleanup in Auburn as well. The question of how bad the situation is lies in the hands of BP, which still hasn't released the exact quantity of oil that is continuing to leak in the ocean.
