It Makes You Think!

Do you ever observe how many times you are asked a question and the person who asks already knows the answer?

I find it happens often and conclude if people would develop the ability to think for themselves they would develop abilities to their own greater benefit.

There are even courses for teaching us how to ‘think outside the box'. If the people I mentioned would think for themselves and then think ‘outside the box' just imagine how much more self sufficient they would be.

A great example of this came through in a recent article about those facing career change as a result of corporate change. It cited the example of a lady who was made redundant after 15 years of working for a charity. Not to be defeated she thought to settle down with Yellow Pages and flick through to see what ideas she would come up with.

When she got to Funeral Directors she realised that she had never seen or heard of a female Funeral Director. She sent off some letters of introduction and was asked by one of the companies to go in for a discussion.

After convincing them ...
... that because she had previously worked as a nurse she would be able to cope emotionally they took her on.

She is now one of the few female Funeral Directors in the country and gets great satisfaction from her new vocation. She does not necessarily enjoy the work but finds that the relatives respond to dealing with a female Funeral Director and considers it a privilege to serve people at their time of acute distress.

I think this is a great example of how to think, and thinking ‘outside the box' for a number of reasons.

The lady applied her thoughts to finding a source of new jobs. She had a think about how she could use previous experience and she had the courage and initiative to take action. As always ‘action is the key'. Anyone will succeed if they are prepared to take action and think.

TIP Take time to think, it is the source of power.
