First it was medicine that confused the heck out of anybody. Understandable, given the complexity of the human body, it would have been more prudent just to thoroughly study one part or one system and be familiar with anything that might go wrong with it. But dentistry? How many parts does a mouth have?

From the way dental science has progressed, the answer seems to be: many. Maybe not that many to merit a huge number of specialties, but enough to produce quite a confusion to an average guy. There's even one specialty that somehow blurs the line between dentistry and surgery. But it seems that dentistry has differentiated into two specialties : orthodontics, which tries to restore full functionality in the mouth by addressing problems with existing oral structures; and prosthodontics, which tries to restore functionality by the use of appliances. And the common thing they share among the two disciplines is that there the treatment of infections or abnormalities.

... the dentist then didn't just mean that one was to have a tooth extracted or a cavity filled. One went to the dentist then to ask him about the proper way to brush, how one's teeth could be rid of stains and discoloring. Nowadays, seems one has to go to a specialist dentist for such.

Maybe not necessarily. There could still be places where dentists still do many things a patients wants done on their teeth. A dentist in Raleigh NC could still do a lot of things the old dentists used to do, and probably a lot more of the new things new dentists do today.

To a dentist, Raleigh is one of the best areas to practice dentistry in. Because it is an affluent community, people tend to flock to dental professionals who provide a wide range of procedures.
